Cricket: Australia fast bowler Pat Cummins was ruled out of the remainder of the one-day series against England yesterday after suffering a side strain in the opening match at Lord’s on Friday. “Pat sustained an abdominal muscle strain on his left side during the first ODI at Lord’s,” Australia team doctor John Orchard said in a statement. “This will keep him out of the remainder of the England tour. His return to cricket will be decided in due course, based on follow-up examinations in Australia.”

Open Water Swimming: An attempt by British-Australian woman Penny Palfrey to swim unassisted from Cuba to Florida ended in failure early yesterday after she had to be pulled out of the water unable to cope with a strong ocean current. “Penny Palfrey had to be pulled out of the water, after swimming for more than 40 hours,” the team said in a tweet. It said Palfrey had to abort her bid to reach the Florida Keys at about midnight (0400 GMT yesterday) due to a strong southeast current “that made it impossible for her to continue her swim”.

Tennis: Wimbledon officials spoke to Australia’s Bernard Tomic (picture) after the racquet-smashing end to his surprise first-round loss, a report said yesterday. Repairs were needed when Tomic, 19, damaged court two at the All England Club and he was also fined, the report said. Tomic, a quarter-finalist at last year’s tournament, lost in four sets to Belgian wildcard David Goffin on Tuesday, and repeatedly slammed his racquet onto the grass as he walked to the net to shake hands.

Boxing: Cornelius Bundrage recorded a technical knockout win in a rematch over Cory Spinks to retain his IBF junior middleweight title yesterday at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. Bundrage (32-4-0, 19 KOs) stopped the 34-year-old Spinks in the seventh round. The ending came two rounds later than Bundrage’s fifth-round TKO over Spinks in their first fight two years ago in St Louis. The 39-year-old Bundrage was making the second defence of his title and posted his third straight victory.
