St Francis school Year 5 students Lorna Jane Cini of Għajnsielem and Danica Sultana of Munxar, were among the 14 finalists who participated in an international schools essay competition organised by Living Rainforst Centre.

To participate in the competition, which attracted 273 entries, students had to write an essay in English, entitled ‘Dear Mr UN Secretary-General...’ in which they were asked to outline what governments and world leaders should be doing to build a more sustainable future on planet Earth.

The other finalists were from Russia, Ghana, India, US, Montenegro, UK, Dubai and Samoa.

The prize-giving ceremony was held at the Living Rainforest Centre in Berkshire, UK.

Since the Gozitan students were unable to attend the prize-giving ceremony, an event was recently held at their school in Victoria.

Head of school Sr Francesca Abela presented books to the students in appreciation of their achievement.

The students were also presented with certificates sent by the competition organisers.
