Treeless promenade in Xgħajra
Walking through the small village of Xgħajra, by the sea, I could not help notice the lack of trees on its promenade.
With all the wide roads and pavements that have recently been upgraded, surely some kind of greenery should have been included but, alas, roads and concrete stand out. Is the local council against trees?

Trees are a pest in this country. We have so many of them, we're constantly trying to get rid of them.

Xghajra is amazing just as it is. No need for trees to obstacle the wonderful sea view there is.

@Murray-no.but the trees here are not properly taken care of, and will grow and grow, and obstruct the seaview, which is spectecular, and is as nature made it.

To state that there is no Need for trees at Xghajra shows the myopic view that there is of trees on this island, It is obvious that Clarie Busutill does not understand the strong winds that the area is exposed to from the north and east quadrant, trees aound the village, especially on the promenade would shield the houses from these winds. Trees would also insulate the houses from the heat of the sun. as well as give a pleasant shade for people to walk and sit under to enjoy what Ms Busutill referred to as "wonderful sea view "
Unfortunately this is the kind of statements that we are used to in Malta which has caused the eradication of many hundreds of trees from our streets, leading to hotter nosier and more polluted towns and villages.

Mr Scicluna - trees huh ?
As though anybody in our planning departments is capable of ever thinking of things like that ?
For 150 years our infrastructure bright boys have functioned on the limited vocabulary of "road/pavement"
. About 100 years after 1850 the super-innovative idea of road humps (usually quite fat sleeping policemen) was introduced.
But trees? what use are trees? Perish the thought ! Come on ! Be realistic !
Never mind that our roads are ugly and pedestrian-unfriendly – as long as traffic flow is optimized everybody is happy.
Mr Scicluna – you are absolutely right - - - Malta is way, way behind in modern approaches to improving the road environment – this is, of course good news for our car importers and for copious waist-lines.

It's a great pity to see such a lack of greenery. Trees are so useful to the environment that they should be planted by law. Ironically some streets that were lined with trees, have been left leafless (and lifeless) because of some excuse or other.
Considering that in countries like Slovenia, Germany , Britain, France and a host of other European countries, which possess so many forests and greenery it is against the law to fell a tree without replacing it I find it mind-boggling.when I see so much carelessness regarding trees on this island rock of ours. To top it all, whem the initiative is taken by the government to plant more trees in some areas, vandalism or barbarism, rears up its ugly head.

A few years ago a UK local council had an environmental officer whose name was incongrously entitled ....THERESA GREEN(you couldn't make it up as it sounds like a joke). However, whilst trees may be green here in Malta, they are seldom seen .Yet we still have a probelm seeing the woods despite the tress scarity-as their are no woods also.

MEPA is against trees s clearly indicated by the planning applications granted for green zones or those within purported ODZ area's.How apt the lyrics of the song -written over 30 years ago-are today -
THEY PUT ALL THE TREES IN A TREE MUSEUM
THEN CHARGED THE PEOPLE A DOLLAR AND A HALF JUST TO SEE THEM
AS THEY'D PAVED PARADISE....TO PUT UP A PARKING LOT.
Soon the only green we will see will be in the butcher's shop window!
