Somali Osman Omar was this morning jailed two months after he was found guilty of breaching bail conditions by turning up at a police station when he was meant to be indoors.

Mr Omar, 31, had been in prison waiting to be charged with a rape case that took place in 2007 before he was only released on bail in March after Englishman Jeremy Dallas Cope pledged €4,000 as a personal guarantee and allowed him to stay at their Zejtun Home.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera also released Mr Cope from being the guarantor of Mr Omar's bail.

In her judgement she pointed out that Mr Omar was facing criminal procedures of rape and should have understood the seriousness of breaching bail after he had spent five years in preventive arrest.

It was imperative that his conditions were scrupulously and strictly observed and any failure to adhere to his curfew was serious and could never be considered a minor offence, as the defence council he argued.
