Labour leader Joseph Muscat yesterday said the Prime Minister’s leadership was in doubt and the country needed the certainty that he still enjoyed a parliamentary majority.

“Today, we have a situation that is worse than some time ago. Instead of being focused on leading the country, the Prime Minister must stay thinking about what his MPs will do next,” Dr Muscat said.

Speaking on One radio, Dr Muscat said GonziPN was in “meltdown” and the Prime Minister’s position was untenable by his own standards. Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi had said he was responsible for the actions taken by Malta’s Ambassador to the EU, Richard Cachia Caruana, recently censured by Parliament. Dr Gonzi had described the accusations as tantamount to treason.

Reacting to Dr Muscat’s comments, the Nationalist Party insisted the government was focused on bread and butter issues and the Prime Minister would travel to Brussels this week to ensure Malta’s financial allocation from EU funds was not cut by about €500 million.

“Dr Muscat continues to exploit the internal difficulties that three Nationalist MPs have created for the party with their unacceptable behaviour of voting with Labour,” the PN said.
