The Mosta local council had to spend €6,000 in emergency works on two roads pending the outcome of an inquiry into the contract for their resurfacing.
Mayor Shirley Farrugia said the inquiry was looking into allegations that work on the residential roads was ordered by her predecessor without the council’s approval and with no funds earmarked for the projects.
The present council, she explained, had to patch up unfinished work on Id-Dawr and L-Istrinġell streets.
The work ground to a halt when the inquiry was ordered by former Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici.
The board is looking into how the contract was awarded and will identify “any evidence of non-observance of regulations, wrongdoing or abuse of authority”.
The work was awarded to V&C Contractors in December on an order signed by former mayor Paul Chetcuti Caruana.
Dr Farrugia said the patching work took place after the council received a health and safety report on the state of the two roads pending the inquiry, which recommended the work in view of liabilities.
