Members of Unesco Club (Malta) were given a guided tour of Argotti Botanic Gardens in Floriana recently by Argotti director Joseph Buhagiar.
Dr Buhagiar explained that the gardens started off as private spaces in the 18th century. One garden belonged to Grand Master Emanuel Pinto de Fonseca, and the other to the Balì de Argote, who gave the gardens their name.
De Argote’s former summer residence is today being rehabilitated as a visitors’ centre, incorporating a plant science museum.
Part of the gardens, which fall under the University of Malta, is dedicated to indigenous and endemic flora, and cacti and succulents from different parts of the world are well represented in the greenhouse and outdoor collections.
The Unesco Club members’ programme included Mass at nearby Sarria church and lunch in Valletta.
