St Monica School, Gżira, was recently awarded the Green Flag as part of the Ekoskola programme, in recognition of the initiatives taken up by the students’ committees.

The school’s primary and secondary Ekoskola committees focused on the two themes – waste reduction and energy and water conservation.

The primary committee enrolled the school in Refab, a textile-recycling programme run by Electrowaste Ltd.

They also filmed a short documentary on energy consumption entitled ‘Show you care, do your share’ which was used to take part in the ‘U4energy competition’.

The secondary committee embarked on an awareness programme among the students to promote energy and water conservation. They also carried out fundraising activities to help the school buy energy-saving bulbs for all the classrooms.

The Green Flag is a prestigious eco-label confirming a school’s commitment to foster sustainable lifestyles and empower students to adopt an active role in environmental decision-making and action in their school and community.
