This mausoleum consists of a column topped with a gilded bronze aquiline sculpture set on a circular pedestal with bronze plaques bearing the names of fallen air force heroes.
The memorial was designed and assembled in 1954 following designs drawn jointly by the President of the Royal Academy London Charles Wheeler and the academician of the Royal Academy Hubert Worthington.
The memorial is unique in its construction and serves as a significant landmark reminiscent of the pro-anglian post war period.
The column creates an imposing central and vertical axiality which compliment its architectural significance with the expanse of the site.
Together with other war memorials in Malta, it sets an insight into post war military and colonial links towards the importance of national respect to the fallen air force heroes of World War II.
An annual act of remembrance including a wreath laying ceremony is officiated every year by the President of Malta, the Prime Minister and other dignitaries.
Mepa scheduled the Air Force Memorial as a Grade 1 national monument as per Government Notice number 522/12 in the Government Gazette dated May 8.
