Malta International Airport chief financial officer Austin Calleja has taken on the added role of deputy CEO, while head of airline marketing Alan Borg has been appointed chief commercial officer and executive director from July 1.
MIA chairman Michael Hoeferer said: “These appointments are being made in the context of the challenges faced by the industry globally, and is intended to set the company on a better footing in its endeavour to target new markets and further develop the company’s aviation-related business segment.”
Mr Calleja joined in 1991 and formed part of the team that helped the government privatise the airport in 2002. He is a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (UK) and a fellow of the Malta Institute of Accountants.
He previously worked with PriceWaterhouse and British Airways in Malta and later in Rome.
Mr Calleja has been an executive director since 2002 and is directly responsible for finance, procurement and stores, information technology and information management, networks and the Malta Airport MetOffice.
Mr Borg joined the company in 2007 as a manager in the airline marketing department and was involved in securing new airline operations from various new European destinations.
He was appointed head of airline marketing in 2008 and in 2009 he was given the added responsibility of general manager of SkyParks business centre.
He graduated in hotel operations from the Institute of Tourism Studies and joined the company after serving as a sales manager with the Island Hotels Group.
Apart from SkyParks and airline marketing, Mr Borg will now also be responsible for airport parking, advertising, rents, commercial outlets and VIP services.
