Enemalta has dismissed claims that smart meters pose privacy risks to consumers, saying the data recorded is secure and cannot be accessed by third parties directly.
The Forum of Malta Unions had urged Enemalta to respond to claims by an EU data watchdog that warned of “considerable” risks to privacy by the new energy smart meters.
Some 150,000 meters have been installed in house-holds and an additional 110,000 are in the process of being installed.
Enemalta assured customers that protection of personal data was always at the forefront of its operations.
