The Vittoriosa Lawn Tennis Club, in conjunction with the Malta Tennis Federation, will be hosting a European Under 14 Tournament between July 2 and 7.

This will be the fifth year for the club to organise the international competition and are once again being supported by the sponsorship of Kettle Chips.

Details of the tournament were given during a news conference held recently at the VLTC premises which was addressed by club president Paul Micallef.

Other speakers at the conference were David Farrugia Sacco, president of the Malta Tennis Federation, and Carlos Cluett, Kettle Chips representative in Malta.

The tournament’s singles events attracted a main draw of 48 boys and 48 girls. Qualification matches, as well as doubles events, are also being held.

Micallef said the competition has already attracted great interest among junior players from across Europe, including places as far as Russia and Ukraine. So far, 170 players from more than 30 countries have applied to take part, he said.

The Maltese players in the tournament will be Miguel Galea, Zack Ciappara, Alexia Cassar, Rebecca McCarthy, Emily Lightfoot and Katrina Sammut.

Signing in for the tournament will be held on July 1 and the main draw will be held on the same day, in the evening.

Matches from the main draw start on July 2 with the finals scheduled for July 7 on the Atlas Insurance Centre Court at the VLTC.

The tournament organisers thanked Kettle Chips and Simonds Farsons Cisk for their support and invited the Maltese sporting public to attend this event and give their backing to the players.
