Updated: Spinola big screen moves to Tigullio parking area
Watching the game on the big screen in Spinola yesterday evening. Video: Mark Zammit Cordina
The big screen in Spinola Bay is being moved to the parking area in front of the former Tigullio following an agreement between the Lands' Department and Massive Promotions Ltd.
As a result of the agreement, the company withdrew its court application for a warrant of prohibitory injunction to stop the authorities from removing the screen. The court yesterday temporarily upheld the company's request and a final decision was expected this morning.
The company told timesofmalta.com that as a result of the move they will not be showing the 6 p.m. match this evening. The next screening is of the 8.45 p.m. game.
The authorities had wanted to remove the screen after several businesses in the area complained that it was costing them business.
The St Julian's Council said in a statement that although it still believed that the decision originally taken had been the best one in the circumstances, it had no objection to move the event to an alternative site seeing there was agreement between the department and the organiser.

When I look at this country demographic statistic I see that a part of Malta is not part of us, I see that they are just a bunch of complaining form of people . yes that part of Malta forming the elite crowd. Mr. Darmanin people spending 100 euro and 150 between two for a plate or two even many of the non so elite afford it . speaking for my self surely would not go to that area since the quality and quantity are not balanced with the price.
Some places in more elite then sliema area offer batter price and quality balance.
And I question if this country is becoming to serv the few.

This brings back memories of my political activities - when I ventured out as a candidate and started off my campaign, by organising the same activity for Euro 1996 games. And repeated in 1998 World Cup.
This was the first time it was held - setting the ball rolling for a pattern to come.
Many friends had helped me out set out the same at Tigullio - an activity that has gone on for so many years.
it was well placed in the spot we selected - where it never caused much trouble.
it is good that it has returned to it's birthplace and also that an agreement has been reached.
Best of luck to the organisers and also the buisness community around.

Football is international. There are many people worldwide who support other nation's teams. It is just about seeing a team playing and you fall in love with their tactics, teamwork, spirit and passion. So please don't give me this shite. Maltese football sucks and before pointing fingers, no I don't support Italy!

Have you discussed this with the Floriana Local Council and residents before jumping to your conclusion?
Why don't you suggest to put a big screen just outside your front door wherever you live in Sliema?

Now that the big screen is moved, I'd suggest the VAT department to allocate a VAT inspector at the door of each restaurant and verify that each customer is given a VAT receipt. Who knows, maybe with this policy, these restaurants will start claiming a profit :-)

What a shame this country has become!!! I really want to see the major piazza's in Italy remove the big screens to accommodate owners of "elite" restaurants... U halluna!!!
Egosim at its best... Why don't the restaurants have a look at what they're offering and see exactly what's pushing away people from their business! The prices not reflecting the quality of the food may be just one of many...
Mr Jurgen Grech
Jun 15th 2012, 16:15
Not much sense in the decision...parking spaces lost at the detriment of locals as anyone visiting the area will now park in residential roads...my recommendation: get a picnic cooler full of cold chilled beer and head to TaQali! No parking problems, nice atmosphere and no "mniehirhom imxammar" jaraw lil kulhadd dubbien ghax mizbugh abjad u ahmar jew ahdar, abjad u ahmar! Halluna ngawdu 'l football u nzommu mal-barrannin jekk it-team taghna ma jasalx!

Gosh this was a real storm in a tea cup, like one restaurant owner said that by the time the verdict came out the Euro 2012 would be over. It was just for a short time and it's well to be a pessimist and make a fuss maybe hoping they could sue and get some money out of someone. It's said that the council in San Gilijan is driven by the businessmen of the same area who are well known to bicker and moan. So now that action has been taken is it really going to make such a huge difference ? Isn't there still going to be yet another problem with parking and its not like there won't be any noise anyway.
What should really be taken into consideration should be the permanent residents of the area. They may complain but it seems nothing at this kind of speed ever gets done. Still I do agree that the screen should have been where it always was, in the car park of Tugulio. It's an event for a short period of time, for Chris sake! let it happen. What's next? Are they going to moan about the Festa next cause that an explosion of its own !!!!!

Jun 15th 2012, 16:01
it's not a big deal that the screen has been moved 100meters from original position, however in that case, please move the maltese feasts, as there are people who cannot stand them, remove church bells, as there are people who need to sleep during the day due to night shifts, remove sirens and horns from police cars as supposedly after 11pm these would be classified as noise pollution. if you use your horn in a residential area you get fined, if police does nothing happens, people like me just get woken up reaaally angry.
so people complaining about a 1hr30min match in the evening that finished at 10.45pm, please start complaining about these other things i mentioned, as apparently you know how to do it! they moved the screen in less than a week. u should try for elections you are simply great

Very well done to who took this decision!!!!! And what about the residents?? As usual residents are the last in the priority list from the local council side.
This will add to the already big inconviinience for residents. Drunk boozers piss.. and vomiting in residents veranda`s. Very good dear Mr. Mayor.
This is apart from the usual parking problem especially in Triq Wied Ghomor.
What about the legal notice regarding the carrying of glass items in hand. Ohh sorry the Tiguglio area is not inclued in this stupid legal notice. This area is exempt as if this is not an integral part of the entertainment area. Of course not. Probably this area lies under a particular protection who knows from who..........
Start thinking about the hell some of the residents are living in because a total anarchy exists in this area!!

It's completely unbelievable how you scroll through the cart-load of comments and see everybody commenting in support of their own opinion with complete disregard for the opinion of others. We Maltese are selfish, no matter on which side we stand, and have so much more to learn indeed!! It's not a question of polarisation to A or B - it's a question of doing things ethically - providing a service, and doing it properly in order to minimise the effect on others who have other things to do or may not be interested. This is the way it's done in civilised countries.
Take a look at what's done in continental Europe with the single exception of New Year events. I'm not talking about 42-inch screens which have the tendency to be put up in indoor or outdoor bars and cafe's. But large screens the size of the one put up in St.Julian's are usually installed in parks, and not in the middle of a busy urban area.
It's all about ethical planning with respect for absolutely ALL citizens, and eliminating the "this is what suits me and/or my pocket and f*** you Jack" attitude which is so typical of this island. The point of discussion is to still provide a free football championship entertaiment service to the people, but with minimal noise pollution and unnecessary crowding in a busy area where there are certainly other people with other agendas. In this way everybody's can carry on with their own idea of life un-disturbed.
But then in Malta there are no noise pollution laws anyway, and in this respect we still live in pre-historic times as compared to the Western world.

Just yesterday the Nottingham City Council erected a large screen at City Square which is surrounded by businesses and residents. Festivities for the Jubilee and the queen's visit went on till late at night. This idea that Malta is some sort of backwards 'pre-historic' country is only subscribed to by people who have never put one tiny little toe out of the island and disgusts me more than anything that goes on in my mother country.
The only problem we have in Malta is that certain people hate other people having fun and so do thier utmost to disrupt occasions such as feasts and the Euro 2012. So long as the noise is gone by 23:00 as prescribed by law, what is everyone's problem?

Jun 15th 2012, 23:35
You are being uncivilised and stupid even more than you wish to portray others to be. First of all you have no right to speak for all of us Maltese and call us selfish or what not.
The n have you ever been abroad? have you ever educate yourself of other continental European countries? Have you ever been to Barcellona? Rome? Milan?
Do you have a TV? Have you switched it on when Italy is playing and the game is shown on the biggest screen ever in the largest, most central of the urban part of Italian cities? Have you been made to beleieve that Europeans are civilised and the rest of the world not?
Grow out off your colonialist mentality will you?
Whatever - defenetely do not call us racist remarks by labelling us all Maltese to be so and so - you would be helping us be be civilised even more that way.

t seems that many people believe that once land is public (or privately owned), nobody can interfere with any event taking place theron. Wrong. Noise, light, crowd behaviour, etc, go BEYOND the confines of such land, and invade PRIVATE properties. This is akin to the discoes taking place at Ta Qal till early morningi. But here, no authority has been able to curb it for the last decades. And then they wonder why, as a last resort, people threaten to react with their votes!

this is really unfair I guess if people want to enjoy a PUBLIC area they should with out any restauratiers deciding for them as if they owned the land.
What people should do is get a pair of binoculars go to spinola and watch the game from there anyway. it is still a public area so no one can tell them to leave. or else just celebrate there after the game

This issue is the imposition of noise and disturbance in a public area, especially without a permit to do so in the first place.
Just because it's a public space doesn't mean anyone can do as they wish (although many Maltese fail to see this).

Unbelievable! Even a short term event such as this, fans enjoying a bit of fun is too much for some 'elite' restauranteurs!
