In a Bondí+ programme held in the first days of June, Deborah Schembri, who will be remembered in history for her part in the campaign for the introduction of divorce in 2011, asserted that Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi was wrong in the fact that he did not back the parliamentarians when they voted in favour of the introduction of divorce.

But Dr Schembri should keep in mind that we Christians believe that God is infinitely superior to all classes of human beings. Also, that His laws are infinitely above all decisions humans decide to make.

In other words, to make the picture more clear, no Christian can morally back other people’s decisions if these are against divine laws. So, as a Christian, Dr Gonzi was absolutely wholly right in that decision of his. Not wrong in the very least! While the other side, no matter the political colour, was morally wrong to throw under its feet God’s law on the indissolubility of marriage, which is no less than a dogma of our religion.

As mere human beings, that is, simply as creatures of the Most High, we are always wrong when we behave against the Creator’s injunctions.

We are His creatures and, as such, wholly subject to His laws. When and where humanly possible, no human consideration can exempt us from observing them and from being loyal to them.

I am pretty sure that Dr Schembri admits the above. Yes, no considerations, much less those political, can justify man from disobeying divine laws. In this sphere, parliamentarians are mere human beings like the rest of us. No difference at all. Not in the very least!
