Omega-3 supplements do not appear to prevent mental decline in old age, a study review has shown.

Previous research has suggested that omega-3 fatty acids, especially those in fish oil, can help keep brain cells healthy. But experts now say there is no evidence that they maintain mental function in ageing individuals, at least over timescales of up to three years.

Researchers studied the findings of three trials looking at the effects of omega-3 taken in the form of capsules or added to margarine spread.

Famous Maltese dog

A dog judged by the Guinness Book of World Records to be “the animal photographed with the most famous people” has died of cancer.

Lucky Diamond died in New York. The Maltese was about 15, according to her owner, Wendy Diamond, who dedicated her life to animal welfare.

The dog starred in photo ops with celebrities ranging from Kristen Stewart of Twilight fame to hip-hop star Snoop Dogg. In November, the Guinness experts put her total at 363, including Kim Kardashian, Sir Richard Branson “and many more”.

Hotel abuzz

A landmark hotel in the heart of Manhattan is buzzing with thousands of tiny new visitors, but watch out – they will sting if you get too close.

Honeybees have taken up residence at the Waldorf-Astoria New York, one of the Big Apple’s most famous institutions and a favourite stopover for many US presidents.

The hotel plans to harvest its own honey and help pollinate plants in the skyscraper-heavy heart of the city, joining a mini beekeeping boom that has taken over hotel rooftops from Paris to Times Square.
