Germany coach Joachim Loew said he was delighted to have six points after two games from the so-called “Group of Death” at Euro 2012 as Mario Gomez scored twice in the 2-1 win over Holland.

The win put the Germans top of Group B, ahead of Portugal with Holland last in the table after their second defeat following last Saturday’s shock loss to Denmark.

Now just a point against the Danes on Sunday in Lviv will put the Germans in the quarter-finals.

“We have six points from the so-called Group of Death, which is very good and we have opened the door to the quarter-finals,” said Loew.

The 52-year-old is eager to finish as group winners to set up a quarter-final against the Group A runner-up in Gdansk, where the Germans have their Euro 2012 base in Poland.

After defeats to Denmark and now Germany, Holland must beat Portugal back in Kharkiv on Sunday to stand a chance of making the quarter-finals and Loew said his side cannot rely on other results going their way.

“Denmark will be very tight, maybe we have to change our defence to deal with that, it is something I will think about,” said Loew.

“We still need points, we can’t rely on the other game being a draw.”

With temperatures at kick-off in Kharkiv over 30 degrees Celsius, Loew said he was pleased with his players’ fitness, but admitted he is tempted to make some subtle changes for the Denmark game to rest players.

“The temperatures were extreme and the game was highly intense,” said Loew.

“This is a long tournament, there are still lots of hurdles to get past.

“Maybe we could look at a few changes against Denmark as defensively they will be very, very tight.

“Maybe a few players need a break so if we make it to the quarter-finals they will be fresh.”
