A staggering 451 Form V students in government schools opted not to sit for 'O' level exams this year, figures given in parliament show They included 70 students classified as 'statemented' (having particular difficulties).

Ten students in Church schools and three in private schools also did not sit for their exams, of whom six in church schools have special needs.

The figures were given in parliament by Education Minister Dolores Cristina.

The worst figures were for the girls' secondary school in Hamrun where 57 students (included six statemented) did not sit for their 'O' levels.

That was followed by 37 students at the Fortini Annexe Boys' Secondary School in Cottonera and 31 at Boys' secondary in Gzira.
