In Rabat, after several failed attempts at seeking permits for invasive developments, owners of land at It-Tafal tal-Imdina (behind houses fronting George Borg Olivier Street) were granted a permit to erect three villas.

This site is defined as an “open space” in the North West Local Plan and a “scheduled area of archaeological importance”.

Towards the end of May 2012 the Malta Environment and Planning Authority’s audit officer concluded an investigation by declaring that the only two permits issued on the site (PA 5414/02 and PA 3976/04) were granted contrary to policy and should never have been issued.

Local residents are united in strongly objecting to this or any other kind of development in this area.

Would it not be the right occasion for Mepa to consider withdrawing the said permit?

It would be a mature and heroic decision of a thinking government organisation which rates Maltese people and their heritage higher than any developer’s business plans.
