England midfielder Ashley Young believes his team-mates can make a winning start to Euro 2012 against France on Monday after two morale-boosting friendly wins in recent weeks.

The Manchester United star, who is expected to partner Danny Welbeck in attack, said 1-0 wins over Norway and Belgium had given Roy Hodgson’s side a lift heading into Monday’s Group D game in Donetsk.

“Everybody in the squad is feeling confident ahead of that game and I’m sure if we can go out there and create the displays we’ve shown in the last couple of games, we can go out there and get a good result,” Young said.

“The two 1-0 wins were good wins, especially the way we kept our shape and managed to get ourselves forward and get the goals.

“I think it’s going to be important to do that on Monday.”

Young, 26, agreed the outcome of the France match could prove decisive in shaping the outcome of the group.

“I think it’s always important to win the start. We’ve got to get off to a good start in our first game which is obviously a tough one,” Young said.

“Everybody’s looking forward to it and as long as we go out with the organisation we showed in the last two games, working together, I think we’ll go out there and get the win.”

Young meanwhile revealed that suspended Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney was also helping to bond the team behind-the-scenes.

“He’s a world-class player and it’s disappointing not to have him for the first two games but we’ve got to get on with it,” Young said.

“He’s been in the squad, keeping everyone happy, and that’s the importance of having him around even though he’s not playing the two games.”
