Congolese national Edmond Malu Malu Monika Ngala, 38, has been charged with slightly injuring his partner when he slashed her in the hand with a knife yesterday night.

The man, a refugee who lives in Birkirkara, pleaded not guilty to trying to seriously injure the woman, with who he had a two-year-old daughter, the illegal possession of a knife, harassing his partner and causing her to fear him at their home.

He was also charged with holding the woman against her will and failing to control himself when drunk earlier on that evening when the couple were out in Sliema.

The man was granted bail on condition he does no approach his partner and against a personal guarantee of €5,000. Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna issued a protection order binding the man not to approach the woman.

Police Inspector Josric Mifsud prosecuted.
