An 18-year-old from Kirkop, Melvin Zammit has been selected by Google as one of the 15 finalists for the The Google Science Fair 2012.
The Fair is an online science competition seeking curious minds from the four corners of the globe. Anybody between 13 and 18 can enter.
"Geniuses are not always A-grade students. We welcome all mavericks, square-pegs and everybody who likes to ask questions," Google said when the competition was announced.
It said it had received fantastic projects from the four corners of the world and had narrowed the competition down to 15 finalists who will take part in the finalist event in California on July 23, where the winners will be crowned.
Mr Zammit's project is about 3-dimensional display.
"Nowadays we are witnessing a wave in the development of 3-Dimensional displays. The industry presented us with 3D screens and TVs. However the Stereoscopic technology used in most of these devices proves rather unnatural to our eyes. The aim of this project is to build a 3-Dimensional display that can display ‘real’ 3D images. The entire project is based on the idea that if more than one transparent image is put in front of each other, a 3D image forms," Mr Zammit said. (see youtube video)
