Twenty immigrants from Eritrea, Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan left Malta on Wednesday to start a new life in The Netherlands.

The five families and five single adults fell under the UNHCR resettlement scheme and were seen off by Home Affairs Parliamentary Assistant Beppe Fenech Adami.

Over the past two months, a number of cultural orientation sessions were held in Malta for the migrants by the Dutch Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers.

They will also be helped to integrate into society once they have settled down.

The Netherlands organised the relocation following a commitment made at the ministerial pledging conference organised by the European Commission for member states and associated countries last May.

The aim was to provide some assistance to countries receiving large numbers of asylum seekers.

Dr Fenech Adami thanked the Dutch government for taking part in this project.

So far, 234 persons who were granted asylum in Malta have been relocated to other EU states and countries within the framework of the project.
