Art recently became life for students from San Anton School.

They looked at some expressive portraits by masters such as Munch, Matisse, Caravaggio, Frida Kahlo and Vermeer ... and then reproduced their famous paintings, acting the same emotions in front of a camera.

Some students took on the role of model and others that of the make-up artist.

Fifty students studying the History of Art participated in the photography workshops as part of the Kreattiv Funding Programme – an initiative of the Ministry for Tourism, Culture and the Environment.

It aims to bring together schools and creative practition- ers to work with teachers and students to inspire, learn and create in a collaborative and innovative manner.

The students, armed with disposable and digital cameras, soon dispelled any notion that studying History of Art is dull. They are pictured here with the real painting inserts, top right.

In the final workshop, under the tutelage of James Micallef Grimaud, students created stencils out of photographs and experienced the thrill of any graffiti artist as they created a 12x8ft mural.

The project, held during lunch breaks and after school hours, ran from January to April and was coordinated by San Anton School’s Senior Sector Art teacher Alison Zammit Endrich.
