The Vittoriosa skyline is being spruced up as unwanted TV antennas are removed by the local council.

As part of its policy of improving the old city’s sights, the council is offering residents the chance to have any unnecessary TV aerials removed for free.

So far 171 residents, representing a fifth of the households, have applied. Owners of unoccupied and uninhabited houses and apartments were also contacted.

Three workers assigned to the council by the Employment and Training Corporation are removing all unused metal pipes, vents and antennas. Many households no longer need such aerials as they have cable TV.

Vittoriosa mayor John Boxall, who spearheaded the initiative, said at least four truckloads of unwanted material had already been taken down and sent for recycling in as many weeks.

“Visitors and residents can now better admire and appreciate Vittoriosa’s beauty and its outstanding cleanliness,” he said.

Other work being carried out by the council’s nine ETC workers includes the maintenance and restoration of the Auberge de France, which is expected to house the council’s administrative offices in the near future.
