Sliema residents have a lot to gripe about. Still I am sure they all concur that the notion to turn Bisazza Street into a pedestrian oasis was sublime and proved to be a great success.
I believe in the aphorism of giving credit where credit is due. I use Bisazza Street daily and it is always abuzz with activity, it is vibrant, colourful and dare I say cosmopolitan with the various languages you pick up. It is also noteworthy that the people are always dressed to the nines on any given day of the week. It is quite odd and rather funny spotting distinguished looking people being photographed sitting with the statues of the Maltese artistes.
Now before putting pen to paper I consulted a dictionary to make sure that I knew the meaning of pedestrian and the dictionary explained pedestrian as “a person who goes or travels on foot, a walker”.
Therefore, Bisazza Street is reserved to those who use their feet. Just think of my utter astonishment and alarm when crossing the street I was less than half a metre from being run over by these new, motorised tricycles one rides standing up. Now according to my reckoning this rider had no business there as Bisazza Street is a pedestrian zone, reserved only for walking.
I plead to the powers that be to be more vigilant as these new gadgets are a potential peril, especially for children enjoying the freedom of roaming about in safety, mothers with prams and pushchairs, senior citizens and the public in general.
Finally, I appeal to the riders. They have all the streets of Sliema and Malta, for that matter, at their disposal.
Please, leave Bisazza Street alone. You know what happened to Eve: she had a whole orchard of fruit to choose from but went for the forbidden one and ruined everything. Please do not ruin Bisazza Street. Do not be selfish.
