The Malta International Airport (MIA) team won the 15th European Airports Football Championship which was played at Ta’ Qali over the weekend.

In the final, the host team beat Moscow Sheremetyevo 2-0.

Markus Klaushofer, CEO at Malta Airport, expressed his delight at the team’s impressive run and eventual success in the tournament.

“This is a significant achievement for a small team like ours and I would like to thank all the players and coach for their dedication and commitment,” Klaushofer said in a statement.

The MIA selection were under the guidance of coach Simon Sultana who was delighted that his team had finally achieved their goal of winning the European airports title.

“It was not an easy task but all our players gave everything to reach this objective,” he said.

“The record of eight games with just one goal conceded underlines the great commitment of the team.”

First round: vs Krakow 0-0; vs Munster/Osnabruck 3-0; vs Dublin 2-0.
Second round: vs Frankfurt 0-1; vs Moscow Sheremetyevo 2-0; vs Domodedovo 1-0.
Semi-final: vs Bratsk 2-0.
Final: vs Moscow Sheremetyevo 2-0.
