The strategic goals set out in the draft National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) for Malta are translated into the following action-based and outcome-oriented measures, which are grouped into 18 thematic areas, and must be achieved by 2020, in eight years’ time.

Theme 15: Biodiversity Monitoring (Code BM 1-2)

BM1: A national biodiversity monitoring strategy is formulated by 2013 taking into account established indicators such as the EU 2010 Biodiversity Baseline and relevant updated streamlining European 2010 Biodiversity Indicators. The implementation of such a strategy will help Malta fulfil its monitoring obligations under the EC Nature Directives and biodiversity-related MEAs in a manner that will be coordinated and coherent.

BM2: Setup and support through training, a national volunteer network that carries out biological recording on selected taxonomic groups of terrestrial species throughout the territory of the Maltese Islands.

Mepa published the draft National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) for Malta on February 28, 2012. The NBSAP aims to set Malta on the right track to meet its own bio-diversity and other environmental objectives, as well as its international commitments, by 2020.
