Special sensors installed at Marsaxlokk will give a better picture of the strength of the sun’s rays.

Collaboration between the University of Malta and the University of Valladolid, Spain, has been translated in a campaign to measure ultraviolet solar radiation.

A UVA and UVB sensor has been acquired and installed at the Institute for Sustainable Energy in Marsaxlokk, with financial support coming from the University’s Academic Research Fund.

Two Spanish students have also installed a UV index instrument at the institute.

Data  collected will be validated against mathematical models with the aim of building a long-term database of UV radiation and UV index history for the Mediterranean region. This is being complemented by collaboration and databases from other countries, including Italy.
