A group of 36 students from St Joseph School, Sliema, accompanied by five teachers, recently went on a school mathematics trip to England where they took part in various activities that gave them a new and different perspective to the subject, and an opportunity not only to put their mathematical skills into practice but also enhanced their teamwork skills.

At a centre in Osmington Bay, Dorset, run by PGL, the UK’s leading provider of residential children’s adventure holidays, they took part in a quad biking session during which they recorded data which was later used to calculate their speed, while their pulse rate was put to the test on a giant swing. In abseiling sessions the students applied trigo­no­metry to calculate their vertical descent over the rock face.

The students also did some fieldwork in Lulworth Cove in Dorset and spent a day walking through the countryside. At one point they stopped to admire the Durdle Door, which is similar to the Azure Window in Dwejra, Gozo.

The students also had a taste of England’s heritage. They appreciated the ancient stone circle and the beautiful scenery around Stonehenge and spent a day in Bath.

The trip came to an end with a brief visit to London. They enjoyed the breathtaking views of the city from the top of the London Eye, and then had time to walk around and view some important landmarks such as Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden and Buckingham Palace.
