The strategic goals set out in the draft National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) for Malta are translated into the following action-based and outcome-oriented measures, which are grouped into 18 thematic areas, and must be achieved by 2020.

Theme 14: Research and development (Code RD1-3)

RD1: Working partnerships with research institutions are developed or strengthened in order to undertake targeted interdisciplinary research that improves an understanding of biodiversity in ecological, social and economic aspects, and in line with policy demand.

RD2: Attainment of know-how of environmental technologies and use of best practices assist in the fulfilment of national compliance and implementation requirements of the EU environmental acquis.

RD3: Research is undertaken in cooperation with other Mediterranean countries in order to identify marine areas beyond the limits of national jurisdiction eligible for designation as protected areas in accordance with international law.

Mepa published the draft National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for Malta on February 28. The NBSAP aims to set Malta on the right track to meet its own biodiversity and other environmental objectives, as well as its international commitments, by 2020.
