Eight prisoners died while serving their sentence at the Corradino prisons since 2003, (then) Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici said in reply to a parliamentary question yesterday.

Four died of natural causes - one at the prisons, one at St Luke's, one at St Vincent de Paul Home and one at Boffa Hospital.

A magisterial inquiry is under way over a prisoner's death, the minister said.

A prison warder also died at the place of work.

The minister was replying to a parliamentary question by Nationalist MP Franco Debono.
