The prime minister will accept Carm Mifsud Bonnici's resignation as Leader of the House of Representatives if the Opposition's censure/no confidence motion in the minister is not approved, informed sources said today.

The minister made the surprise announcement of his readiness to step down from the post at the start of this morning's parliamentary sitting.  Nationalist MP Franco Debono yesterday criticised the fact that Dr Mifsud Bonnici was made Leader of the House when he was facing a motion of censure by the House.

Dr Mifsud Bonnici was appointed to the post in January when Dr Gonzi reshuffled part of his Cabinet, splitting Dr Mifsud Bonnici's Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs by transferring responsibility for justice to Chris Said.
