Opposition leader Joseph Muscat this evening called on the prime minister to 'do the decent thing' after the Minister of Home Affairs lost a vote of confidence.

He told a press conference that the motion was clear and the minister should therefore resign.

He said this was not the first time that the government did not have a majority in the House. In the past the government was saved by the Speaker.

Now the situation was much more serious and Dr Gonzi should do the decdent thing. He did not specify whether he was calling for a general election.

During the debate, Dr Muscat noted, government MPs had said they considered this vote as a vote about the government.
