Sixty-three Maltese women flew to the UK to have an abortion last year, up from the 51 reported in 2010.

The largest number of abortions was registered in 2009 when 78 were reported. The lowest figure – 36 – was registered in 1982.

The information was released by the UK’s National Statistics Office and the Department of Health.

Just under 190,000 abortions were carried out in England and Wales last year.

Anti-abortion lobby group Gift of Life said: “Although from a statistical point of view these numbers may be relatively small, each one represents an aborted child and, in many cases, a silently grieving woman, partner, friend or parent.”

It said its support unit, Hope, helped 100 mothers since 2006, offering information and confidential support to help them make an “informed decision”.

Hope can be contacted on 2141 8055 or at hope@go.net.mt.
