A total of 63 abortions were performed on Maltese women last year, according to the UK's National Statistics Office, the Gift of Life group said.

The highest number of abortions on Maltese women was in 78 in 2009, the lowest 36 in 1982.

The NGO said that although, from a statistical point of view, these numbers may be small, each represented an aborted child and in many cases a silently grieving woman, partner, friend or parent.

Gift of Life said it continued to offer positive support for women in crisis pregnancies who were considering abortion abroad. Hope, the support unit of the foundation, has assisted more than 100 mothers since 2006, offering information and confidential support on many levels.

GOL said women generally did not want an abortion and many opted to keep their baby if they found positive help and encouragement. Family members and friends could have a powerful impact on the mother's decision to abort or keep her child.

It said it also supported women who were hurt by abortion and asked for psychological support. The foundation works with another set-up, Rachel's Vineyard, that offers confidential support to people suffering as a result of abortion (Contact 79248842).
