The prime minister this evening gave details to back the government's claim that more than 20,000 jobs were created since the general election.

Replying to a question in parliament by Joe Mizzi (PL) Dr Lawrence Gonzi said the number of new jobs was calculated by having the net increase of gainfully occupied  part-time and full-time workers added to the number of redundancies since a person who was made redundant and found a new job meant that a new job was created.

These positive results, he said, were also confirmed by the fact that the ETC during the same period had 43,000 registered vacancies and made more than  15,000 placements.

Dr Gonzi further pointed out that in the past four years, the ETC had more than 60,000 engagement forms registered every year. Such forms were filled every time a person took on a job, changed his/her job or registered as a self-employed.
