No Floriana deal for coach Brincat
Ivan Woods takes over on caretaker basis
Floriana have decided not to renew the contract of coach Joe Brincat, the Premier League club announced on their website.
The Greens’ preparations for their participation in the Europa League are expected to be led by experienced player Ivan Woods who has taken charge of the team on a caretaker basis.
Team manager Adrian Mifsud has been confirmed until July.
Floriana will begin their pre-season on Wednesday at the pitches of De La Salle College.
Brincat had signed a short-term deal to replace Michael Woods as Floriana coach in March but it seems that he hasn’t impressed enough to be handed a new contract.
The Greens finished fourth in the Premier League, two positions down from the previous season when they also won the FA Trophy, but still entered the Europa League through the backdoor.
This came about as, apart from champions Valletta and runners-up Hibs, who had already qualified for the Champions League and Europa League respectively, the two other semi-finalists in the FA Trophy, Qormi and Ħamrun Spartans, were not eligible to compete in Europe as they don’t have a licence.
Floriana have awarded one-year deals to three foreign players, namely Togolese defender Eric Akoto, Dutch goalkeeper Patrick Jansen and Swedish winger Andre Grabowski.
The contracts of Woods, Argentine Pablo Doffo and Duncan Pisani have been extended until July.
The club also announced that outgoing president Johan Said is holding talks with all squad members and two Brazilian players are expected to have a trial in the coming days.
The statement also said that Damian Camilleri, Floriana’s for-mer treasurer, is engaged in dis-cussions with Said over the financial audit which will be presented at the club’s annual general meeting next month.
