David Beckham's place as the highest paid player in Major League Soccer has been taken by former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry.

Beckham, who hopes to play for Great Britain in the London Olympics, has seen his Los Angeles Galaxy salary drop by nearly 40% in his current contract.

Beckham now has a base salary of $3million and guaranteed compensation of $4m, in figures released by the MLS Players Union.

His previous base salary had been $5.5m with a guarantee of $6.5m as part of a 32.5m dollar five-year contract.

New York Red Bulls striker Thierry Henry is now the league's highest-paid player with a base salary of $5m and total compensation of $5.6m.

Henry's team-mate Rafa Marquez is second at $4.6m, followed by Beckham and Galaxy team-mates Robbie Keane at $3.4m total and Landon Donovan ($2.4m).
