Kurt Calleja was beaming and couldn't quite believe it as Malta qualified for the Eurovision Song Contest last night. (Video and story at http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20120524/local/this-was-the-night.421170 )

It's like a dream come true...it's such a great experience, I'm speechless" Calleja told eurovision.tv

"I'm looking forward to Saturday, hopefully the whole of Europe will appreciate what we did."

Meanwhile, it was announced that Malta's entry will be the 21st to take the stage tomorrow. The UK's entry will be the first and Moldova will be last at 26th. The Russian Grannies will be the sixth in the running order.

Ma kellek l-ebda garanzija bil-kantanta li qed tireferi ghaliha inti konna ha nghaddu ghal finali. Il -verita hi wahda li Malta ghaddiet bil-kantanta li int qed isejhilha 'out of place'! Kif diga ghedt jidisjacini ghal Ylenia li ma telghetx maghhom u tilfet l-esperjenza, imma finalment jien jinteresani min rizultat posittiv ghal Malta u mhux li ggib l esperjenza kantanta/ kantant partikolari!

Malta deserved to be in the final - thanks to the sympathy the band generated, to the good PR and to the good performance yesterday...but all in spite of Amber. That's what I am saying. I have nothing against either Amber nor the maltese song. It was an excellent performance. But not Amber's part. And before anyone accuses me of having ulteriour motives I must make it clear that I am a fan of Amber's and loved the songs she entered in the Malta contest - I was actually hoping that her song this year wins! But this is a mis-match...and what you are calling "ftit nies" are not "ftit" at all - even by considering just the comments here!

C Demanuele

May 25th 2012, 14:06

so you are in the business and you know how the arts industry works. it is fine by me but I prefer being in 'ignorant bliss' and enjoy the show.

Mr Andrew Camilleri

May 25th 2012, 14:22

Mr Fench - how patronising of you! "The Maltese" he says, qisna xi kocc mozz. You sound like that minister who when confronted with the people's criticism that Arriva was not working, he comments that it was too 'avant garde' for the Maltese. If you are so knowledgeable, why donlt you help us poor idiots to get to the 21st centrury instead of just passing know-it-all comments?

Ms Xaxa Caruana

May 25th 2012, 11:52

@Roderick Cristina

Please note that when we voted in Malta Festival, the song had another version at the end.

You think that Amber was great...ok...you have all the right in this world, I think the opposite .

Lets hope that in tomorrow's final her voice will not be same as yesterday.

Joseph Micallef

May 25th 2012, 11:29

Well if you do a fast google search you will realise that it is not just us maltese who don't like Amber in Kurt's song. This is not nagging. This is just stating facts. Amber did not blend with the song no, not at all...and I did listen to all the song. Amber has a voice, timbre and style totally different to Kurt and his band. It is not her fault, it is the fault of PBS who decided to change the original singer, Ylenia, with Amber - a totally unfair move also!

C Demanuele

May 25th 2012, 11:47

@ joseph micallef - check why she was changed. I liked Ylenia but she could not make it. and you are not stating facts. they are opinions of people, as you and I are doing. foreign people voicing an opinion does not make them experts, like we are not. and opinions are opinions, that is why they are different.

Ms Xaxa Caruana

May 25th 2012, 11:47

@C Demanuele

Since you seem to know why Amber was chosen, why don't you tell us?

Unlike you I don't think that she 'blended' with the song....and yes we did listen to all the song, in fact its nearly at the end of the song where the 'foul' was done.

Lets hope that action is taken, so for tomorrow all will go well. Awguri Kurt and band.

Roderick Cristina

May 25th 2012, 11:48

Li it's unfair on Ylenia that's another issue. But the fact is that Amber's voice improved the song. Also this is the majority of the comments I read in various webistes and not as you're saying.With Ylenia it was as if there was no backing vocal as her voice is not powerful as Amber's and for a backing vocal you need a powerful voice. I'm not blaming Ylenia in anyway, I wish her all the best in her career, but for me, and a lot of others it was a good move for the benefit of the song.

Ms Xaxa Caruana

May 25th 2012, 11:58

@Roderick Cristina

'With Ylenia it was as if there was no backing vocal as her voice is not powerful as Amber's.....

You are talking nonsense dude......this song won the Malta festival as it was.......you are being unfair towards a young lady.....and after all a backing vocal means, backing and not shouting your lungs out and overcome the main singer.....and after all this is KURT's song and not Amber's...her song did not make it to the final yes???

Joseph Micallef

May 25th 2012, 12:47

Mr.Demanuele - it was in all the press why Ylenia was changed - it was "because a stronger voice was needed" - if what you heard yesterday was a strong voice then I rest my case - to me and the MAJORITY of people even non maltese - it was nothing but wrong. You have a right for your opinion - hopefully it is a well informed one!

Joseph Micallef

May 25th 2012, 12:48

Ylenia could make it - they just chucked her out. Check your facts Mr. Demanuele!

Joseph Micallef

May 25th 2012, 12:53

I beg to differ Mr. Christina - Amber's voice is not powerful, at least not for the needs of Kurt's song. If what you heard yesterday was powerful (when she sang "this is the night, this is the night" on her own) then most people I talked to and most commentators here must be going deaf!

M Borg

May 25th 2012, 13:27

Oh do shut up.

Why is it that we Maltese are never happy?

We now have a song that will take part in Saturday's final and still you find things to complain about.

Just say Prosit and hope for the best.

Well done Kurt and all .

Kenneth Galea

May 25th 2012, 11:33

I was thinking about that Michel. I do remember Amber came 3rd in the Malta song festival. Did Kurt want Amber in his band or was she simply pushed forward to perform? Perhaps that is the reason why Norman Hamilton decided to leave as a consultant for the Eurovision. Nevertheless I wish Kurt the very best for the final, he deserves it, nice lad with great ambition. Good Luck Kurt!

Joseph Micallef

May 25th 2012, 12:49

Yes Kenneth, that was one of the reasons stated by Norman Hamilton on his resignation!

@TuffyDavies Davidson

Beware dear Tuffy....you might be running into a big surprise, and for us Maltese, rest assured that we are and will be PROUD of Kurt, coming first or last.

Cause you see unlike others , we have no neighbors, or Maltese brothers and sisters are spread mostly in Canada, America and Australia and not in Europe. So what ever the result is , PROUD shall we be.

May 25th 2012, 11:43

May 25th 2012, 11:52

@ joe fenech - thank you for putting most of the people are ignorant. you should do lectures on how you define yourself as appreciating classy stuff. I for one enjoy any kind of music according to my mood. And eurovision is a song contest, and just that. so I enjoy seeing it and compare our talents with people around the globe. nothing else.

Joe Fenech

May 25th 2012, 12:07

Roderick Cristina:

Event? I guess the rubbish collection is also an event for you. It's just a crap TV show that people, apart from the Maltese, watch for a laugh.

C.Demanuele:

I agree with you - it is a song contest, but a poor and queer one which bears no impact on anything - not on the music business, not on tourism, not on the Maltese cultural scene. It is a contest which sucks up a big chunk of Malta's cultural budget. When you don't have the dough, you have to get your priorities right.

C Demanuele

May 25th 2012, 14:11

@ joe fenech - with your argument the esc should not have even been done since much of the competing countries 'don't have the dough' at present. anyway, I rest my case here with all the comments since we have a different definition of what culture is. And if we define everything in monetary matters then we should stay home waiting manna. everything comes with a price, but some things are more worth when done with passion rather than quantified with pounds and shillings.

@TuffyDavies Davidson

First of all thank you Kurt for making us maltese so proud :) Excellent performance!.

As for you dear Tuffy, Kurt is no Englebert Humperdinck cause as you most surely know he has toured nearly all the world. Uk really had the cheek to choose him!...

BEST OF LUCK TO OUR DEAR SINGER KURT AND HIS TEAM!!!

At last there is someone who has got the sense or maybe the heart to speak about the sufferings of Azeri people. The Eurovision Song Festival this time was one big propaganda machine for a kleptocratic regime (all the oil riches which are plenty are enjoyed by the ruling dynasty) with little regard for human rights. Does anyone know, that whilst pouring praise on Malta's and Kurt's achievements, there are people who are suffering the results of being forcefully evicted from their homes as to make way for this hypocritical pantomime (Kurt and all the other singers could have been standing on what was once somebody's kitchen or bedroom)? Does anyone know that journalists and opposition activists are being tortured amid the spectacle of skysprapers and monumental buildings? Shame on us for being naive and stupid enough in spending taxpayer's money on Ilham Heydar oglu Aliyev's propaganda stunt, the Eurovision. Shame to all the countries that took part in Azerbaijan. It is not pride that we should be feeling, but a sense of guilt for supporting and participating in this abominable event.

May 25th 2012, 09:19

Totally agree; can we have the original version for the final please?

Ms Xaxa Caruana

May 25th 2012, 09:31

@Joseph Micallef

Can I ask , why they replaced her? I mean when Kurt won as a team, this singer was part of the winning team...it does not make sense.
I agree with you 100%, Amber has a great voice, but it's not adequate for Kurt's song, I hope the people in charge do take note of what we are saying....
