I like Gozo very much. In fact, I visit the island about three or four times a year. The trip on the Gozo ferries is an enjoyable experience in itself. The ferries are spotlessly clean, the crew very helpful and the ferries very well maintained. If a tunnel is constructed I will still use the ferry.

Having said all this, there are two things that worry me. Why are the lockers containing the life-saving jackets all on the upper passengers’ deck? Why are none of them at the lower passengers’ deck?

Secondly, I suggest that while vehicles are in the queue to board the ferries at Ċirkewwa, a random search is carried out to make sure they are not carrying any dangerous matter.

Each ferry can carry about 100 cars, vans and trucks, not to mention the ships gthat have double decks. I hate to think what will happen if one of the vehicles has a short circuit and is on fire or there is a fire in the ferry engine room and the captain of the ferry decides to beach the ferry at the nearest land, which is Comino.

Safety suggestions must not be ignored. Prevention is better than cure.
