This WAS the night - Kurt makes it to the final
Kurt Calleja put paid to the doomsayers and took Malta to the final of the Eurovision Song Contest today.
He gave a confident performance of This is the Night on stage in Baku, smiling constantly as he got the crowd clapping and swinging and can now look forward to coming up against a bit of everything on Saturday – from the Buranovskiye Babushki Russian Grannies to British Crooner Engelbert Humperdinck, 53 years his senior, as well as a number of veritable newcomers.
The countries which qualified this evening – and announced in random order - were Lithuania, Bosnia, Serbia, Ukraine, Sweden, Macedonia, Norway, Estonia, Malta and Turkey.
Kurt and his band jumped for joy when Malta’s qualification was announced, throwing kisses at the cameras, hugging each other and waving small Maltese flags.
This will be the first time that Malta will be in the Eurovision final since Chiara made it for her third time in 2009.
Thea Garrett failed to qualify in 2010 with My Dream and Glenn Vella was unlucky to make it last year with One Life.
The final will be contested by 26 countries – 10 each selected from the two semi-finals, the 'big five - France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and host Azerbaijan.

Regarding the performance, i was really astonished. those 3 minutes of the song just livened up the whole arena from what I could see from TV. but unfortunately i beg to differ when it comes to the back up singer. Amber placed 3rd in this year's eurovision. So to be fair, they shouldn't have sent her. for me the first back up singer, Ylenia, was great. she gave out her best and the song was just as catchy!
imma kif jghid l Malti, kif gara ma Amber:
'ma dahlitx mill-bieb,dahlet mit-tieqa.'
Voters of the Eurovison chose the initial song how it was. at least voters should be respected for that and not go up to the Eurovision now in May with changes in a song that not even the Maltese heard about!
in conclusion, i would love to know the reason why Ylenia was initially removed.
i wish all the team best of luck for tomorrow! you've already made Malta proud ! keep it up :)

As for all the negative feedback on the female vocalist. I beg to differ: actually I'm thinking maybe those were precisely the notes she was asked to sing. After all, she hit her pitches perfectly at 2:16 and 3:02.

Messrs let’s stop criticizing and commenting nonsense, we’re at the finals so well done to all the team, including those who didn’t go there, but were fundamental in Kurt’s success. Well done to the authors as well.
@ Kurt and all: it will be tough tomorrow, but enjoy your night and make us proud whatever the outcome!

To Mr Scerri, Malta hopefully does have a bit of tactical voting in place.
The UK tends to look on Malta with high regard along with Ireland and for one, and all my Maltese family here in Uk shall be tactically voting for Malta! Ok not the best song, but who cares? It's about time Malta won and hope they do!!!!!

The fact of the matter is that the Maltese have not yet understood how the arts industry works.
They are stuck in the Mintoff quasi-communist mentality (justified 40 years ago but unrealistic today) hoping that by getting a push from the state (who puts most of its cultural budget into this contest) they MIGHT win the contest (in reality, a TV programme) and MAYBE then make it big in music.
Get real! Any one in business will tell you the same.

And by someone in the business, I mean a professional who knows the arts industry.
Joe Fenech
May 25th 2012, 12:11
Every year I tell you the same:
INVEST IN THE ARTS NOT IN THIS CRAP SHOW. Yes, it's a fun thing but when you don't have the bucks, you need to get your priorities right. Eurovision sucks up a huge part of Malta's cultural budget.

Lauren don't forget that there is still another night to perform. So if there are things to put right before next Saturday, then why not, it has to be done. I was one of those to point out about Amber, it doesn't mean that I said Kurt's performance was bad.
Good luck Kurt. Just be yourself and do your best, like you did last Thursday.
We all appreciate your (the whole band's) effort.
I hope next Saturday will be another night of good results.

I have to admit it that I was very skeptical about the song. The first time I heard it seemed like something I’ve heard many times and the fact that there was another song with the same name, made me believe that it would have been another crappie flop for our country. But yesterday’s performance was extraordinary, and somehow it caught my attention more, and the fact is that I believe that the song had all the credits to deserve a place in the final. So on this account a very well done must be in order here and all my best wishes for the finals to come. Make us proud Kurt!!

I just can't understand it - and neither can I stomach it - when we, as a nation, are "amazed" and "SURPRISED" when a Maltese person performs or competes WELL against other countries!! This is a perfect example of small island mentality. But this is one case where size DOESN'T matter. Just because our land mass is small, it shouldn't automatically limit our POTENTIAL. When will we learn to be PROUD of who we are and what we are?! We have so much to boast about and yet the national pastime seems to be self-ridicule and derision. It's like we're embarrassed to show our support....it's downright shameful.
Lauren Bianchi
May 25th 2012, 11:55
You are so right. We are so quick to just dismiss ourselves and just think foreigners do it better. Funnily enough it is the same with most Maltese companies too, let's give the reigns to foreigners, so when we succeed we can say oh " Imma Dak ghandu l esperjenza u mnalla kien hu" why can't the state, and everybody else believe in what we Maltese can offer? The Maltese are a strong and tough nation, we should be proud of that and be surprised if we fail not if we succeed.
Joseph Micallef
May 25th 2012, 11:13
Even foreigners noticed that there was something wrong with the inclusion of Amber - as can be seem from this quote "4) Malta - Kurt Calleja - This is the night
Kurt delivered us tonight's first uptempo pop song. He gave us the impression that he enjoyed being on stage a lot. His vocal performance was solid whereas one female backing singers had some problems to hit the right notes."

May 25th 2012, 11:51

Mr. McCarthy - I don't need to watch anything - I am quite familiar with Amber's voice and know that "breaking" her voice is her trademark - a trait similar to singers like Adele. That's why she did not fit in!

...I'm no Eurovision fan, but I've just watched the clip and it looks like Kurt has managed to grip the audience in his hands. The song (I'm no fan of pop, give me a Led Zep or G'n'R track anytime) is catchy and upbeat, and that footwork during the chorus adds spice to the whole thing.

May 25th 2012, 09:39
Dear Claire...the girl you say as "stunata" was not "stunata" in the sense that she was out of tune, but "stunata" as in OUT OF PLACE. That girl is in fact AMBER who came second in the Malta contest and who was imposed on the team by PBS. Yes she was out of place - her style does not match the style of Kurt's song and it is a shame that someone so irresponsible took such a decision - I mean if non-experts can sense that, how come the so called "experts" can't?!!
Claire Bezzina
May 25th 2012, 11:16
Dear Joseph, I understand your point.. but if I was asked to take part in the Eurovision whilst knowing that I am out of place I certainly would have not participated.....Kurt's performance was great and she sang 2 words and they came out wrong....i think she can do better with other songs but these 2 words she had to sing were not for her
J. Pace
May 25th 2012, 11:35
@Joseph - whether she is great singer or not does not count in this case. Myself I am not at all a music expert, but her two words ruined from my perspective the great performance of Kurt.
If as someone said earlier, someone decided to remove the original singer Ylenia and instead put in Amber, this was a big mistake, provided there weren't extreme circumstances we don't know off.
Otherwise I wish that her two words are completely removed from the song for next Saturday. They really sounded ugly and out of scope.
Joseph Micallef
May 25th 2012, 13:02
@Ms Bezzina and Mr. Pace - I never disagreed with what you are saying - what I meant is that it is not because Amber sang badly but because she does not fit in with such a line-up! She did not sing out of tune, nor did her voice break - as someone else thought. It is her trademark voice - which is fine with slow songs such as Adele's - but not suited for an uptempo song such as Kurt's!

EUROVISION.......simply a super performance and a most excellent presentation, now it is in the lap of the political gods who will decide... Is Malta's representation a winner...definitely 100% a big yes, but those of us who are old enough to remember many years ago, Sir Cliff Richard come second with "Congratulations" to a French song called La, La, La, and does anyone out there remember La La La, and has anyone ever forgot congratulations, yes we hear it everyday of the week..... so why we are all hopeful, it is as Sir Terry Wogan always stated, that finally it is politics who will win, so let us hope that it will be our turn on Saturday............!

Great band, great singer and a great show. This was one of the toughest Eurosivision I ever watched and heard. But Kurt looked confident. I was a bit disappointed by the lady singer, her voice sounded a bit dull. Maybe she was excited. Hope she will sing better next Saturday.

Mr.Fenech - the female singer sings that way normally - she sings similar to Adele. She does not fit with such a song and someone at PBS is responsible for such a blunder of a decision - irrespective of tomorrow's outcome!

well done Kurt... our daughter is your number one fan and she is only eight months old. You should see her jump when she hears your song. Good luck for next Saturday... however it turns out you already made us Maltese proud! God Bless

Amazing performance! It was a good idea to say that Malta will probably not qualify for the Final, as it removed pressure off the shoulders of the Maltese contingent. Looking forward to a similarly 101% performance next Saturday. Good luck Kurt and co.!

I am in a bar tonight watching Eurovision in the centre of Leeds and just before each country that were thru to the final were announced everyone around me were shouting Malta , Malta , its catchy its cheesy and its typical eurovision , Kurt did a great job , that dance they did as gone down a bomb here , some guys here were trying to do it .

Great performance ! Well done to all the team. It was tougher than if he would have sung on Tuesday. Unlike Tuesday, today most of the songs were not bad and most of the countries were ex Yugoslavia or ex USSR.
