This WAS the night - Kurt makes it to the final

Kurt Calleja put paid to the doomsayers and took Malta to the final of the Eurovision Song Contest today.

He gave a confident performance of This is the Night on stage in Baku, smiling constantly as he got the crowd clapping and swinging and can now look forward to coming up against a bit of everything on Saturday – from the Buranovskiye Babushki Russian Grannies to British Crooner Engelbert Humperdinck, 53 years his senior, as well as a number of veritable newcomers.

The countries which qualified this evening – and announced in random order - were Lithuania, Bosnia, Serbia, Ukraine, Sweden, Macedonia, Norway, Estonia, Malta and Turkey.

Kurt and his band jumped for joy when Malta’s qualification was announced, throwing kisses at the cameras, hugging each other and waving small Maltese flags.

This will be the first time that Malta will be in the Eurovision final since Chiara made it for her third time in 2009.

Thea Garrett failed to qualify in 2010 with My Dream and Glenn Vella was unlucky to make it last year with One Life.

The final will be contested by 26 countries – 10 each selected from the two semi-finals, the 'big five - France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and host Azerbaijan.

Maybe she was studying for her exams, and that's why she couldn't go?

Lauren don't forget that there is still another night to perform. So if there are things to put right before next Saturday, then why not, it has to be done. I was one of those to point out about Amber, it doesn't mean that I said Kurt's performance was bad.

Good luck Kurt. Just be yourself and do your best, like you did last Thursday.

We all appreciate your (the whole band's) effort.

I hope next Saturday will be another night of good results.

Neville, nixtieq ninfurmak li meta tikteb kollox b'ittri kbar hija ta' skumdita' kbira ghal qarrej biex jaqra l-paragrafu.

Hija xi' haga wkoll li tmur kontra kull etika ta' "blog-writing" ghax hija kkunsidrata bhal ghajjat.

You are so right. We are so quick to just dismiss ourselves and just think foreigners do it better. Funnily enough it is the same with most Maltese companies too, let's give the reigns to foreigners, so when we succeed we can say oh " Imma Dak ghandu l esperjenza u mnalla kien hu" why can't the state, and everybody else believe in what we Maltese can offer? The Maltese are a strong and tough nation, we should be proud of that and be surprised if we fail not if we succeed.

Amber had a good performance - she just does not fit with the style. It's PBS to blame not her!

May 25th 2012, 11:51

@ Joseph Micallef: ...please watch the clip again; I am sure you MUST be able to discern that the backing singer's voice "broke" during her solo, and consequently failed to hit the intended notes.

@Mr.Andrew Camilleri..we all have a right to express our opinion..since we live in a democratic society..but i am sure you must have different principles!

Joseph Micallef

May 25th 2012, 12:59

Mr. McCarthy - I don't need to watch anything - I am quite familiar with Amber's voice and know that "breaking" her voice is her trademark - a trait similar to singers like Adele. That's why she did not fit in!

Joseph Micallef

May 25th 2012, 09:39

Dear Claire...the girl you say as "stunata" was not "stunata" in the sense that she was out of tune, but "stunata" as in OUT OF PLACE. That girl is in fact AMBER who came second in the Malta contest and who was imposed on the team by PBS. Yes she was out of place - her style does not match the style of Kurt's song and it is a shame that someone so irresponsible took such a decision - I mean if non-experts can sense that, how come the so called "experts" can't?!!

Claire Bezzina

May 25th 2012, 11:16

Dear Joseph, I understand your point.. but if I was asked to take part in the Eurovision whilst knowing that I am out of place I certainly would have not participated.....Kurt's performance was great and she sang 2 words and they came out wrong....i think she can do better with other songs but these 2 words she had to sing were not for her

J. Pace

May 25th 2012, 11:35

@Joseph - whether she is great singer or not does not count in this case. Myself I am not at all a music expert, but her two words ruined from my perspective the great performance of Kurt.

If as someone said earlier, someone decided to remove the original singer Ylenia and instead put in Amber, this was a big mistake, provided there weren't extreme circumstances we don't know off.

Otherwise I wish that her two words are completely removed from the song for next Saturday. They really sounded ugly and out of scope.

Joseph Micallef

May 25th 2012, 13:02

@Ms Bezzina and Mr. Pace - I never disagreed with what you are saying - what I meant is that it is not because Amber sang badly but because she does not fit in with such a line-up! She did not sing out of tune, nor did her voice break - as someone else thought. It is her trademark voice - which is fine with slow songs such as Adele's - but not suited for an uptempo song such as Kurt's!

Weggajtli qalbi .you mentioned Sir Terry Wogan. The Eurovision is nothing without him :(

Yes it is repetitive. A bit too repetitive in fact. It could have been a minute or so shorter, however Kurt pulled it off brilliantly. Prosit! Same cannot be said for the backing vocalist though. I think she screeched and ruined an otherwise fantastic performance.

Vera ghandek ragun, hemm bzonn li ghal ghada tbaxxi ftit il volume ta lehen, kien hemm mumenti li volume tal-backing vocal kien iktar qawwi min ta Kurt, u stunat wahda u sew.

Ma kinitx stunta fis-sens li kantat hazin...anzi kantat tajjeb hafna - imma fl-istil taghha. U hawn fejn tistona - fl-istil! Kienet OUT OF PLACE! L-izball mhux taghha imma tal PBS li ddecidew li jnehhu il-kantanta orginali, Ylenia, u minflok deffsu lil Amber, kantanta brava li giet it-tieni fil-festival ta Malta. Amber tkanta stil ta Adele - stil kompletament differenti minn ta Kurt!

Neighbours did not vote? Holy cow are you blind? Western Europe was wiped clean off the map and a new Europe was created last night. Malta was an oddball. Two Scandinavian countries and 6 eastern block countries (i'm including turkey). Neighbours myth? No myth there at all. It's reality.

The original female singer who accompanied Kurt during the local festival was much better. I can't see the reason why she was removed. Well done Kurt and the band. They really deserved to represent Malta in the final!

Joseph Micallef

May 25th 2012, 14:27

Mr.Fenech - the female singer sings that way normally - she sings similar to Adele. She does not fit with such a song and someone at PBS is responsible for such a blunder of a decision - irrespective of tomorrow's outcome!
