Mepa this morning approved a planning application for an upgrade of the façades of the City Gate apartments.

The upgrade will be carried out by the government as part of the City Gate project.

The apartment block is located opposite the new Parliament House above the City Gate shopping arcade.

The work will consist mainly of the replacement of some of the stone open balconies with  closed timber balconies. The open balconies in the central and two lateral bays are being retained. The three central arches in the arcade facing Republic street will be replaced by a flat arch similar to the rest of the arcade.

No decision was taken on a proposal to build a public lift leading from Republic Street to Pope Pius V Street. The location proposed for the lift is the southern corner of the block at the side of the housing block.
