I am a little confused by Adrian J. Galea’s letter All Vehicles Should Have Road Licences (May 22) in that when the Bicycle Advocacy Group looked into the question of insurance for motorised bicycles last year, most insurers and indeed the Insurers’ Association themselves did not seem ready to offer cover for these vehicles. This is despite the fact that the law had prescribed the same since 2004.
I would be most grateful to know if and how this situation has improved.
One suggestion to insurers would be to allow pedal-powered bicycles to be covered under a car driver’s or motorcyclist’s existing policy.
While this would not cover everyone, this might encourage more drivers to leave their car at home, further reducing traffic congestion and pollution, especially so for short trips to the shops, for instance.
The insurers win by reducing the insured risk to the car as it is not being driven.
The driver wins due to less wear and tear on the car while enjoying several health benefits and easier, more convenient parking.
