Motorists are being given the opportunity to contest traffic contravention tickets online, the Home Affairs Ministry announced today.

Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici said that to date, motorists needed to write a letter to the Petitions Board to contest tickets issued by policemen or wardens.

As from today, they may contest the contravention through an online system at www.les.gov.mt

To do so they will be required to register and then give reasons for their contestation. They can also upload any pictures or documents they consider relevant. The board may itself request additional information which petitioners can then upload.

The motorists will receive an acknowledgement from the board and will be able to track the status of their petition online. A reply will normally take between four and six weeks.

Dr Mifsud Bonnici said this new system will make petitioning easier and lead to less paperwork. It will also make it easier for the authorities to gather data.

He said that since 2006, almost 100,000 petitions had been registered with the claims of some 60% of motorists being upheld. This year, up to April, 6,972 petitions were registered, with 3,992 upheld and 1,300 pending.
