The 27th meeting of the season at Marsa yesterday was made up of nine races, all for trotters on a long distance of 2,640m.

In the absence of events from the Premier class, the highlight of the programme were three races open for trotters from the Gold category as Noel Baldacchino was the best driver of the afternoon with two wins.

Fourteen horses lined up for the first Gold race.

Here, Ouistiti d’Anjou (Julian Farrugia) sprinted ahead of the field with 200m to go. This French ten-year-old went on to gain its first win at the racetrack, a half-length ahead of pre-race favourite Victory Farming (Shaun Portelli).

Oscar des Racques (Noel Baldacchino) and Confidence As (Tony Mallia) were third and fourth respectively.

Natif de l’Hommee (Raymond Clifton) led all the way in the next race from the Gold class.

In the final straight, the leading horse staved off the challenge of Touch the Diamond (David Ellul) to seal its second win in a row.

Deli du Ling (Cliferty Calleja) and Novak (Rodney Gatt) followed home in that order.

Outsider Night Inlet (Noel Baldacchino) dashed strongly from the outside of the field around 500m from the end of the third Gold event.

Night Inlet, an 11-year-old French trotter, won its first race of the season by a length and a half from Wim (Brian Zammit). Energy Launcher (Redent Magro) and Ouest du Vivier (Cliferty Calleja) followed behind.

Yesterday’s card at the racetrack also included two events for Silver Class trotters.

In the first, Ouragan de Crouay (Larson Mifsud) met little trouble to record its first win of the season from Man Quick (Jason Cordina).

Cal Win (Shaun Portelli) gained its first win in Malta in the other Silver race after surging ahead in the last 300 metres.

Another meeting will be held on Sunday at Marsa. This will consist of ten races all for trotters. The first race starts at 2 p.m.
