A 26-year-old man from Birkirkara this morning admitted being part of a trio conning people out of money.

Steve Grima, together with Anne Antide Calleja, 20 of Għargħur and Grace Calleja, 22 of Gżira, admitted they would stop people at petrol stations and ask them to exchange money so that they could fuel their cars.

They would give the people counterfeit €50 bank notes in exchange for smaller notes.

But one of the victims realised what had happened and noted the number plate of the conmen's car.

The two women admitted to the crime and were placed on probation for three years on Thursday.

Mr Grima admitted to the crime this morning and was remanded in custody pending a pre-sentencing report.
