Ten poems written by Karmenu Vassallo, one of Malta’s leading romantic poets, and set to music by composer Dominic Galea, are being performed at a concert marking the 25th anniversary of the poet’s death, tomorrow.
The concert, taking place at the University’s Sir Temi Zammit Hall, will feature leading singers Claudette Pace, Ludwig Galea, Corazon, Joseph Aquilina and Doreen Galea.
The commemoration will also include a video feature about the author and an exhibition of documents, both prepared and coordinated by Marcel Zammit Marmarà.
Held under the patronage of the Prime Minister, the programme will take the form of a multi-disciplinary evening.
Entitled Nirien, like the CD album that will be officially launched tomorrow, the evening is organised by Mr Galea and Manwel Mifsud, lecturer at the Department of Maltese, in collaboration with the University, the Research Innovation and Development Trust of the University (RIDT) and Heritage Records, the producers of the CD.
Affectionately known as Il-Poeta tan-Nirien, Karmenu Vassallo (1913-1987) was one of the mainstays of Maltese literature.
He wrote many literary works in Maltese, Italian and English. His poetry portrays his lifelong experiences, in particular his love for Siġġiewi.
Admission to the event is free of charge. However, a copy of the CD, Nirien – Poeżiji ta’ Karmenu Vassallo, will be given to all those donating €10 and over.
One can reserve a seat by e-mail: comms@um.edu.mt or by phone on 2340 2829.
The concert starts at 8 p.m.
The CD album is available at leading record shops.
