The funds are being provided under the  Operational Programme I Investing in Competitiveness for a Better Quality of Life .

The Private Schools Association said the purpose of the project is to reduce the schools' dependence of electricity produced from fossil fuel.

The participating schools are: The Archbishop's Seminary, St Michael School, Saint Elias College, St.Augustine's College, St.Francis School Cospicua, Savio College; Bishop's Conservatory Secondary School, Bishop's Conservatory Secondary School, St.Francis Secondary School (Sliema), St.Aloysius' College, Convent of the Sacred Heart School Foundation, St.Paul's Missionary College, St.Albert the Great College.

The Green Energy Schools (GES) project, which is spread over 18 months (2012-2013), will involve the introduction of photovoltaic systems and the installation of Intelligent Lighting systems.

The project's activities will be publicised through the organisation of a Green Energy School Week, targeting school children, parents and staff members alike.

CO2 emissions will be reduced by 489.24 Tonnes per annum as a result of the installation of the photovoltaic units, the association said.

Intelligent lighting systems will be installed in 71 classrooms in three  schools. These systems will include light controllers and motion detectors, which will translate into 22.59 Tonnes of CO2 emissions being reduced per annum. Therefore the total annual CO2 emissions reduced from this project will be 511.83 Tonnes of CO2.
