City earn record league pay-out

Manchester City’s income from Premier League broadcast payments for last season was a record £60.6 million.

Each club received an equal share of £13.7m from domestic TV money, £18.7m from overseas broadcast rights, plus £755,000 for each place they finished in the final league table – that was the sum received by bottom Wolves while City earned £15.1m.

On top of that, each club receives around £570,000 for each time they are featured in live TV matches – at least £5.7m but in Manchester United’s case £13.5m after taking part in 26 live TV games.

Scholes to play on another year

Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes will play on for another season.

The 37-year-old quit at the end of the 2010-11 campaign but came out of retirement in January and played a key role in helping United finish second in the Premier League.

“I am delighted, he knew he had committed a mistake,” Alex Ferguson said.

“He now realises if he plays 25 or 30 games next season, they will be of real quality.

“I think this will be Paul’s last season. We know him very well.

“We have had him since he was a kid. We know how to use him.”

PSV snap up Mark van Bommel

PSV Eindhoven have confirmed the signing of Mark van Bommel on a one-year contract. The Holland captain, a popular figure at the club following a successful first stint, announced last week that he was leaving Milan to return to his former employers.

And they have backed that up, releasing a statement on their official website that read: “Mark van Bommel signed a one-year deal on Monday. He previously played in Eindhoven between 1999 and 2005. He was a champion four times.”

After initially leaving PSV, Van Bommel headed to Barcelona and then on to Bayern Munich and Milan.

Shinji Kagawa set for Dortmund exit

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Shinji Kagawa is set to leave the club this summer after turning down the offer of a new contact.

Kagawa still has a year left to run on his current deal but he is a player in demand and Dortmund are unlikely to run the risk of losing him for nothing next year.

“I had a meeting with his agent and Shinji Kagawa has informed us that he will definitely not be extending his contract,” Dortmund director of sport Michael Zorc said.

United manager Alex Ferguson was present at the DFB-Pokal final at the weekend as 23-year-old Kagawa scored in Dortmund’s 5-2 win over Bayern Munich.

Ranieri on his way back to Fiorentina

Claudio Ranieri, sacked by Inter in March, said he is in talks with Fiorentina about becoming their coach next season following the dismissal of Delio Rossi.

“For now, there has only been a small conversation with Fiorentina.

“I asked if I could meet with the Della Valle family because I know that they want to do something important,” Ranieri, who coached Fiorentina between 1993 and 1997, told reporters.

“I’ve always had a splendid relationship with Florence and it would be an honour if they called me back.”

Ranieri said he is also evaluating other offers reaching him after leaving Inter.

Hazard named Ligue 1 top player

Lille midfielder Eden Hazard was named Ligue 1’s best player for the second year in a row before a probable move to Manchester.

The Belgian playmaker, also named the French League’s top prospect in 2009 and 2010, beat Montpellier midfielder Younes Belhanda, Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud and Paris St Germain forward Nene in a vote by Ligue 1 players and coaches.

Hazard is set to leave the club this year with the Premier League his likely destination.

“It will be Manchester,” he said at the ceremony without disclosing his preference for English champions City, or runners-up United.

Balotelli staying at City – Mancini

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has declared Mario Balotelli is staying at the club. The striker has been linked with a move away from the champions, Mancini admitting after his sending off in last month’s defeat at Arsenal he would “probably” sell him.

Reports in Italy have suggested Balotelli could head to Milan this summer in a swap deal with Zlatan Ibrahimovic but Mancini insisted he was going nowhere.

“Ibra is a great player but I don’t think Milan want to sell him,” Mancini said.

“I’m going to be honest, we haven’t looked at the market yet. In the last five weeks our only focus has been the league. Mario has been very clear and I reiterate he will remain at us 101%.”
