A match programme for the 1909 FA Cup final between Manchester United and Bristol City fetched a world-record price of £23,500 ($37,600) at a public auction today.

It beat the previous record of £21,850 ($35,000) paid in 2006 for a programme from the 1889 FA Cup final.

"The 1909 FA Cup Final between Manchester United and Bristol City was Manchester United's first ever appearance in an FA Cup final and Bristol City's only ever appearance in an FA Cup final," said auctioneer Graham Budd.

"It is extremely scarce and the first time that one has ever been offered at auction. It was bought by a UK collector.

"With Manchester United a global brand, there was some discussion it might go overseas but it did not in the end."

Manchester United beat Bristol City 1-0 at Crystal Palace to claim the first of the 11 FA Cup trophies they have won to date.
